Did You Know?
Did you know that air hockey has been around since the 70's? It was created by an ice hockey player by the name of Bob Lemieux who then sold his idea to Brunswick, a well-known billiard company. With the support of an established company to roll out many tables across the continent the game gained in popularity rapidly. It has been a hit in arcades and family homes now for over 40 years!
While air hockey became the staple of college rec rooms and even carnivals, Brunswick had greater ambitions for the new sport. They organized the very first world championship tournament in 1974 which comprised of 31 regional champions. The evenet took place in New York City where a bounty of $5000 was dangled to tempt more serious players into the tournament. Not to mention that the winner would receive the title of ‘The Best Air Hockey Player in The World”.
Air Hockey Almost Died Out
Air hockey may have died if it wasn’t for Mark Robbins. He was an air hockey fanatic since 1973, and he took out and ad in a trades publication requesting that people donate their used air hockey tables. He rented a 20-foot truck and gradually collected as many as he could from respondents across the country. After storing with the intent of preserving the tables in a Minnesota barn, he convinced US Billiards, the last manufacturer of these tables at the time, to produce a higher quality unit than anything else they had made. This was based upon the original Brunswick Formica-topped
What Size Room Do You Need?
Also, did you know that air hockey tables come in different sizes, styles, and shapes? A standard air hockey table is 90 inches in length and 50 inches wide.
So you ask, what size room would you need to play air hockey comfortably? You would need at least a 10 foot by 7 foot area of open space for a standard size air hockey table.
Are you looking for an air hockey table but don't have that much space? We at Nelson's HomeTowne Recreation may have just the solution for you. We have an amazing table called the Orbit Eliminator Aeromaxx air hockey table. It is round and allows up to 4 players to play at a time. As you strike out your opponents, they put their bumpers into their slot. So we just took the word FUN to a whole new level.
Orbit Eliminator 4 Player Air Hockey Table
The brand new Orbit Eliminator 4 Player Air Hockey Table is played as a survivor-style, 4-person battle to the finish! Each time a puck enters your own goal, a light illuminates. When you have allowed 3 goals and all three lights are illuminated, you are eliminated from the game and the remaining players play on. At this point, you must insert a goal blocker into your goal to let the game continue without you while the blocker keeps the puck in play for active players. If you would like to play with two people instead of four, the goal blockers allow for 2 player game play using the same concept. Let the fun begin!
We also carry standard size Fat Cat air hockey tables by GLD. We at Nelson's HomeTowne Recreation are here to take care of all of your family leisure needs. Stop in and check out our selection of Air Hockey Tables in our showroom in Janesville!
