A Beginners Guide To Darts

Posted by Shock Leitner on Dec 12, 2016 8:12:49 AM

The game of darts can be enjoyable for so many people.  Young and old, from rookie to professional. The game can even be kind of therapeutic for some.  Standing at the toe line visualizing your next shot and really getting into the game or socializing and meeting new friends through the game, it really is a game for anyone.  Soft tip darts are much more popular today than steel tip, although steel tip is still around it is less dangerous in public places to use soft tip darts.

The soft dart itself consists of four parts:

  • The tip. Made of plastic and comes in varying lengths.  This is the part the sticks in the board.
  • The barrel. Made of metal and comes in different lengths and textures. This is the part you hold and the part of the dart that gives it weight.
  • The shaft. Made of plastic, metal, or carbon fiber and comes in varying lengths. This is the part that holds the flight and gives the dart it’s length.
  • The flight. Flights can be made from a number of different materials including plastic, foil, carbon, and many more.  The purpose of the flight is to give the dart stability and gives the dart flight.  (Try throwing a dart without a flight once)

The soft tip dart board diameter is 15”.  It gets hung on the wall so the bullseye is 5’8” from the floor.  The toe line, or throw line is 8” from the face of the board.  Another way to measure the toe line is to measure diagonally from the bull to the line 9’ 9½”.

Once your board and toe line are set up you are ready to play.  There are many games to choose from. Some of the most popular are Cricket, 01, and Count-Up.

At Nelson’s we have a plethora of dart equipment and accessories.  We have dart boards from Viper, Darts Live, and Arachnid that are great for beginners as well as the seasoned pros.  We carry all the accessories you could ever need for your darts, from replacing the parts that came with your set to upgrading into the new styles.  Fit Flight and L-Style are very popular new styles of shafts and flights.
